How to Service and Repair an Axle Shaft Seal on Jeep Grand Cherokee?

The first step in servicing and repairing axle bearings and seals is to remove the axle shaft from the car, because the axle bearing race usually does not tightly fit the tube. With a 3/8 inch drill bit, punch a small hole into the soft steel retainer ring, using a drilling stop to prevent scratching the axle. With a cold chisel, cut the ring around the hole you drilled and then pull the ring from the axle. Press the axle shaft with a Splitter 1130 until the bearing is release and then remove the seal and retaining plate from the shaft. Before installing anything, make sure the retaining plate is flat and the studs aren't loose. If not, change the retaining plate assembly. Set the retaining plate on the axle shaft, grease the back of the seal where it touches the axle shaft and push the seal on securely, with its cavity along the side of the retaining plate. Apply a small amount of Mopar Wheel Bearing Grease or an alternate, to the bearing with a clean cloth and wipe away the extra grease. Install the bearing onto the axle shaft as described by using Installer 7913-A and press it in place, then put the axle retaining ring on the axle using the same tools and method.
