How to service the Output Shaft Seal on 2WD and 4WD transmissions on Jeep Grand Cherokee?

To service the output shaft seal, the propeller shaft should be removed for 2WD transmissions by moving it to the right and securing it. Now take off the nut that secures the propeller shaft flange to the output shaft and remove the flange. To detach the 4WD transmission from the vehicle, remove transfer case first, then remove the bolts that secure the transfer case adapter housing to the transmission case and remove the adapter housing. Take off the extension and also remove the bolt, which holds the output shaft extension to the output shaft. Utilize the proper screw and slide hammer to remove the output shaft seal. To install, place the new output shaft seal over the output shaft against the transmission case. Use Seal Installer 8902A to install it. For 4WD gearboxes, reconnect the output shaft extension to the output shaft by means of a bolt torqued to 200 Nm (147.5 ft. lbs.). Reinstall the transfer case adapter housing. Secure the transfer case adapter housing with bolts torqued to 20 Nm (177 inch lbs.). Install the transfer case. For 2WD transmissions, refit the propeller shaft flange onto the output shaft and secure a new flange nut to a torque setting of 200 Nm (147.5 ft. lbs.) Lastly, Position Staking Tool 9078 and Driver Handle C-4171 on output shaft, rotate staking tool until alignment pin engages output shaft notch, press down until staking pin contacts output shaft nut flange, and strike driver handle with hammer until output shaft nut sufficiently staked. Finish by reinstalling the propeller shaft for 2WD transmissions.

How to service the front Output Shaft Seal on Jeep Wrangler?

To replace the front output shaft seal, raise the vehicle, remove the front propeller shaft and then take out the front output shaft yoke. Utilize a tool for prying to detach the seal from the front case. For installation, place a new front output seal on Installer Tool 8143-A (the garter spring on the seal must be towards the inside of the case). Using light taps from a hammer, begin to insert the seal into the bore. Once it starts to seat, continue tapping until the installer tool seats against the case.

To service the output shaft seal, the propeller shaft should be removed for 2WD transmissions by moving it to the right and securing it. Now take off the nut that secures the propeller shaft flange to the output shaft and remove the flange. To detach the 4WD transmission from the vehicle, remove transfer case first, then remove the bolts that secure the transfer case adapter housing to the transmission case and remove the adapter housing. Take off the extension and also remove the bolt, which holds the output shaft extension to the output shaft. Utilize the proper screw and slide hammer to remove the output shaft seal. To install, place the new output shaft seal over the output shaft against the transmission case. Use Seal Installer 8902A to install it. For 4WD gearboxes, reconnect the output shaft extension to the output shaft by means of a bolt torqued to 200 Nm (147.5 ft. lbs.). Reinstall the transfer case adapter housing. Secure the transfer case adapter housing with bolts torqued to 20 Nm (177 inch lbs.). Install the transfer case. For 2WD transmissions, refit the propeller shaft flange onto the output shaft and secure a new flange nut to a torque setting of 200 Nm (147.5 ft. lbs.) Lastly, Position Staking Tool 9078 and Driver Handle C-4171 on output shaft, rotate staking tool until alignment pin engages output shaft notch, press down until staking pin contacts output shaft nut flange, and strike driver handle with hammer until output shaft nut sufficiently staked. Finish by reinstalling the propeller shaft for 2WD transmissions.
