You should start servicing and repairing the steering by cleaning the pitman shaft and housing at the front with a wire brush. Use a wrench to rotate the stub shaft all the way from one stop to the other, counting the turns, then move it back again to the stop halfway, so the pitman shaft does not contact the housing. First, remove the bolts that hold on the pitman shaft cover, then remove the shaft assembly and finally the pitman shaft cover. Slide the serrated tip of the Puller 7794-A inside the housing and, using the Slide Hammer C-637, remove the pitman shaft dust seal, then ease out the oil seal retaining ring using snap ring pliers. Take the metal and plastic back up washers out of the housing before removing the oil seal with Puller 7794-A and Slide Hammer C-637. Pass Drop Driver 8277 up through the top bearing, line it up with the bottom one and mount Handle C-4171 to remove the lower bearing. Lift the gear to remove the upper bearing by using Driver 8277 and Handle C-4171. To mount the upper pitman shaft bearing, first insert the Driver 8294 into the housing and put the Handle C-4171 on top, driving the bearing until the bottom of the driver hits the flange upside down. Screw the lower pitman shaft bearing onto Driver 8294 and Handle C-4171, pushing it into the housing until its shoulder gets seated. First, put a layer of the special grease on the oil seal and the back up washers. Then, fit the oil seal into position with Driver 8294 and Handle C-4171, add the plastic washer so it rests down on the lip of the oil seal and finally add the metal back up washer. Attachment with snap ring pliers, brandish the dry seal with special grease and connect the seal with Driver 8294 and Handle C-4171. First, fit the new pitman shaft O-ring carefully into place, then push the shaft assembly into the housing, bolt the cover in place, tighten to 62 Nm (46 ft. lbs.) and do the over-center rotation torque adjustment.
