Q: How to Safely Remove a Steering Column on Jeep Wrangler?
A:
Before removing the steering column, make the front wheels face straight and remove the negative battery cable. Afterwards, get rid of the air bag, unlinking the clock spring harness from the cruise switch harness if the steering wheel has cruise control. Remove the steering wheel by using puller C-3894-A or an alternative puller. Afterward, past the cover at the top of the steering column and use a screwdriver to take out the screws from the lower shroud to remove both shrouds. Turn on the ignition and if you have an automatic, pull the interlock cable out of the column. Take out the bolt and nuts where the column sits on the vehicle and then lower the column from the mounting studs. Cut the power to the wiring harness, unplug it from the "A" pillar, pull the shifter interlock cable free and end by taking the whole column out. Take out any needed parts, release the clock spring, remove the switches and, if you have them, take out the Skreem.
Q: How is the Steering Column Installed on Jeep Liberty?
A:
First, place and install the column into the steering coupler. Next, set up the column harness which you connect to the switches and pass the shifter interlock cable via the tie straps. Secure the column onto the mounting studs and leave the two mounting nuts and two mounting bolts a little loose. The lower nuts must be secured first, with the upper ones being secured after, so the capsules will not break. Tighten the nuts in the front and back lower mounts to 17 Nm (150 in. lbs.) and the nuts in the top upper mounts to 17 Nm (150 in. lbs.). Attach the steering column coupler bolt, secured with 53 Nm (39 ft. lbs.) of torque and put back the shifter interlock cable. If needed, attach the clock spring to the column using the method shown in the instructions. Assemble the column shrouds and add the mounting screws during installation. Add the steering column opening cover. Use a new bolts to fix the steering wheel into place and tighten it to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.), join the clock spring harness to the cruise switch harness if the vehicle is equipped with cruise control. After that, install the air bag and connect the negative battery terminal again.
