2000 Dodge Dakota Intake Manifold Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install an Intake Manifold on 2000 Dodge Dakota?
A: Before removing the intake manifold, first take out the negative cable from the battery, then take off the air inlet hose and resonator from the throttle body and air cleaner. Next, decrease the pressure on the accessory drive belt and take it out of the power steering pump and drop it off. After that, take the pump as well as the mounting brackets out of the water pump and intake manifold and move them to a spot where they won't obstruct you. After releasing the fuel system pressure, detach the supply tube from the fuel rail, as a few lines may require a special gadget to remove them. Take the accelerator cable, cruise control cable if it exists and the transmission line pressure cable (if equipped) off the throttle body, using only your fingers to open the cruise control connector. Unplug all the electrical connections from the throttle position sensor, idle air control motor, coolant temperature sensor on the thermostat, manifold air temperature sensor, fuel injectors and oxygen sensor. Drive the harness away from the manifold and put it out of the way. Disconnect the suction hose from the intake manifold connecting to the CCV and seal the intake manifold vacuum port by fitting in the plastic tube that comes with it. Take away the vacuum harness and the vacuum brake booster hose from the bottom of the manifold. Remove bolts 2 through 5 from the intake manifold, slightly loosen bolt No.1 and unscrew nuts 6 and 7. Next, remove the intake manifold and gaskets as you drain coolant from the manifold. Check that there is no unwanted material on the intake manifold and cylinder head surface before installing. Cover the location dowels with the new gasket, line up the manifold and just tighten the bolts by hand. Tighten each fastener according to the instructions: 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) for No.1, 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.) for Nos.2 to 5 and 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.) for Nos.6 and 7. Join the fuel supply tube to the inlet on the fuel rail, listening for a click. Make certain the engine O-rings in the quick-connect coupling are installed. Once the fuel supply tube is pulled firmly out, join the molded vacuum hoses to the vacuum port on the intake manifold and the cylinder head cover. With the electrical connectors removed, put them back in place for the throttle position sensor, idle air control motor, coolant temperature sensor, fuel injectors, air manifold temperature sensor and oxygen sensor. Put the CCV hose end and MAP sensor hose end into the throttle body and then install the power steering pump assembly onto the water pump and intake manifold by hand turning the needed bolts. Tigthen the power steering pump bolts and the tensioner bracket to water pump bolts to a torque of 28 Nm which equals 21 ft. lbs. Respond the accelerator cable, cruise control cable (if found) and transmission line pressure cable (if present) to the hold-down bracket and throttle lever. Correctly install and stress the accessory drive belt to be sure it does not cause overheating of the engine. Make a connection between the air inlet hose and resonator, the throttle body and the air cleaner, placing the clamps under 4 Nm (35 in. lbs.) tension, before reconnecting the battery negative cable. After that, begin the engine and make sure no leaks are present.
