2000 Dodge Neon Brake Caliper Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Front Brake Caliper on 2000 Dodge Neon?
A: The first step is to use a brake pedal holding tool to slowly depress the brake pedal about an inch, isolating it from the hydraulic lines so fluid doesn't escape while you work. Take out the front tire and wheel assembly by raising the vehicle. Take off the banjo bolt from the brake caliper and look at the washers. If they are in bad shape or worn, toss them out. Turn the car so the brake rotor faces up and detach the two guide pin bolts from the caliper to the steering knuckle. Once opened, carefully raise the caliper from the rotor and slide it off the abutment. When you install a caliper after using new brake shoes, pull the caliper piston all the way in the bore. Apply Mopar Multipurpose Lubricant to the caliper slide abutments at the steering knuckle. Be sure that none of the seals on the caliper guide pin bushings is damaged during installation. For the left caliper, insert the top over the top slide abutment and push the bottom of the caliper in; for the right caliper, insert the bottom over the lower slide abutment and push the top. Secure the caliper using the guide pin bolts that you tighten to 22 Nm (192 inch lbs.) and afterward, add a washer to both sides of the banjo bolt before tightening it to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). Mount the tire and wheel back on using 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.) of tightening, drive the vehicle on the surface to test the brakes and bleed the caliper any time needed.
