2000 Dodge Neon Brake Pad Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix Brake Pads on 2000 Dodge Neon?
A: Before fixing or replacing front brake pads, first raise the car and pull off both front tires and wheels. Begin on one side and remove the caliper guide pins, then tip the top or bottom of the caliper far enough to pull it away from the brake rotor and slide the caliper out from the caliper slide abutment on the steering knuckle. Hold the caliper with a wire or cord so the brake hose remains intact. After that, lift the outboard brake shoe retaining clip over the raised part of the caliper to free the shoe and then pull the inboard brake shoe clear of the caliper piston. Do the same thing on the other side. When you are installing the brake, completely retract the piston to guarantee there is enough space between the brake pad and the disc. After removing the protective paper from the noise suppression gasket on each of the brake shoes, slide the inboard shoe so it is pressed against the caliper piston. Slide the new outboard brake shoe onto the caliper and apply Mopar Multipurpose Lubricant to the steering knuckle caliper slide abutments. Set the caliper assembly onto the steering knuckle, checking that the seals on the guide pin bushings have not been hurt. Place the disc brake caliper over the brake rotor and steering knuckle and hook the top side of the left side first. Then, hook the bottom edge of the right side first. Once you have installed the caliper guide pin bolts and tightened them to the needed torque, place the wheel and tire back, secure with wheel mounting nuts so that the setting is 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Repeat everything on the other side-bring the car down, press the brake pedal slightly and drive around for a bit to see if the brake pads are in place and working correctly.
