2001 Jeep Cherokee Brake Caliper Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair a Brake Caliper on 2001 Jeep Cherokee?
A: It is necessary to raise and support the vehicle, then remove the front wheel and tire, before dealing with the brake caliper. Place a small wood or metal spacer between the clamp screw surrounding the outboard pad retainer spring in the master cylinder brake reservoir. To assemble, stand the C-clamp on top of the brake piston in the bore so that its clamp screw presses on the outboard brake pad and the frame is on the caliper's rear. Take off the bolt on the brake hose first, removing any washers and then remove the bolts holding the caliper in place. If the caliper won't budge, use a pry tool to tilt its top outward and remove it from the car. Scrub the brake pad mounting ledges with a wire brush and then lubricate them with Mopar multi-mileage grease. First, put the notches at the bottom of the brake pads into the lower ledge and then turn the caliper over the rotor so that the upper notches become lodged in the top mounting ledge. Swab the mounting bolts for the caliper with silicone grease and secure them so they reach 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.). If the calipers have new bolts or you're fixing a drag/pull issue, ensure the puck pin is no longer than 67.6 mm (2.66 inch) long. Put new seal washers on the brake hose, join it to the caliper and tighten the fastening bolt by 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.), so the brake hose is positioned straight. First, release air from your base brake system, then fit the wheel and tire sets, remove the vehicle supports and bring the vehicle down. Double check that the brake is working properly before getting your car in motion.
