2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Air Bag Control Module Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Properly Diagnose, Service, and Replace an Air Bag Control Module on 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: The air bag control module includes the impact sensor, so before inspecting or fixing any air bag components, disconnect and shut off the battery negative cable, then wait two minutes. Don't hit or kick the air bag Control Module, as this could damage the impact sensor and change its calibration; if the module falls, it must be changed. Take off the battery negative cable from the vehicle's battery to remove the module. Second, separate the nut and remove the center console bracket from the stud fastening it to the floor transmission tunnel. To disconnect the wire harness, move the Connector Position Assurance indicator to the left, press its push button and then pull the connector down and removed. Take out the module after removing the four screws that hold it to the mount on the transmission tunnel. When installing, place the module on the mount so the sucker fit flat at the bottom and the arrow directs forward. Attach the module to the rack using the four screws, tighten them until you reach 7.9 Nm (70 in. lbs.), then fit the harness connector to the instrument panel, making sure the red lock and latch are turned. Slide the center console bracket onto its stud, tighten it with 28.2 Nm (250 in. lbs.) of torque and finally put the center console into place onto the transmission tunnel. Don't put the negative battery cable back on for now.
