2000 Jeep Wrangler Brake Caliper Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Brake Caliper on 2000 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Raise and support the automobile, take out the front tire and wheel and then proceed to service or repair the brake caliper. Drain a little fluid from the master cylinder brake reservoir using a suction gun. Slide the caliper piston to the bottom of the bore and bind it in position with a C-clamp. Place the clamp screw on the brake shoe outside and fasten the clamp to the rear of the caliper using an intermediary wood or metal spacer to guard against contact with the spring for the outboard brake shoe retainer. After that, take out the brake hose mounting bolt and throw out the washers and then go for the caliper mounting bolts. If needed, open the caliper head on the pry tool side and pull it out of the brakes. Before installation, clear the rubber mounting ledges with a wire and put a light film of Mopar multi-mileage grease on the cleaned areas. After positioning the caliper so its notches are on the lower mounting ledge of the brake shoes, turn it over and insert the notches at the upper end of the shoes on the top ledge. Rub silicone grease on the caliper mounting bolts, fit them on the car and tighten them to a torque of 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.). If you are fitting new caliper bolts or the car had a drag or pull condition before, be sure that no bolts are longer than 67.6 mm (2.66 in.). Place the brake hose onto the caliper using new seal washers, apply 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.) of force to the fitting bolt and be sure the hose is not twisted or bent. First, bleed the base brake system, next, attach the wheels and tires, remove the supports and lower the car. Before reaching the pedals, make sure a firm pedal is in place.
