2000 Jeep Wrangler Speed Sensor Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Install a Speed Sensor in 4WD and 2WD on 2000 Jeep Wrangler?
A: The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) sits on the speedometer pinion gear adapter and is attached to the transfer case extension on 4WD vehicles and the extension housing of the transmission on 2WD models. You should raise and support the vehicle, then press and slide the tab and secondary release lock to take out the electrical connector from the sensor. After that, take the bolt out of the sensor mount and pull the sensor straight out of the pinion gear adapter, without taking the adapter away from the transmission. Clean the inside of the speedometer pinion gear adapter, add in the sensor and fasten it with the bolt, making sure the sensor is fully on the adapter before tightening to 2.2 N.m (20 in. lbs.) torque. Connect the electrical wire back to the sensor after you have cleaned it.
