2000 Jeep Wrangler Brake Drum Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How Can Brake Drum Components Be Properly Cleaned and Inspected for Wear and Damage on 2000 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Wipe down important brake parts such as the support plate and wheel cylinder with water and a cloth and do not use any other type of cleaner. Remove both light rust and scale from the contact pads of the brake shoes on the support plate using fine sandpaper. Brake shoes with rivets should be switched when the remaining lining is only 0.78 mm (1/32 in.) from the rivets and those with bonded lining should be replaced when the lining is 1.6 mm (1/16 in.) thin. The lining should have even contact across its whole width; if only one side touches the lining, the shoe should be changed and the drum should be checked for tapering. Check the adjuster screw assembly and if either the star wheel or threads are broken or if the components are seriously corroded or rusted, change the assembly. Replace brake springs and retainers if they seem worn, deformed or completely collapsed and change the springs as well if brake pedals feel sticky after they get too hot. Look closely at the contact pads on the support plate and if any appear worn, rusted, bent or twisted, replace the entire plate.
