2000 Jeep Wrangler Catalytic Converter Parts and Q&A
Q: How Should You Service a Catalytic Converter on 2000 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Let the exhaust system cool off before servicing the catalytic converter, since it stays very hot even after engine use. Remember not to put flames near the fuel lines when you have any torches. Unplug the oxygen sensor connector(s) to avoid harm to its wiring and to the sensor itself. First, lift and support the car, then soak the studs and nuts with Mopar(r) rust penetrant and wait five minutes for results. Get the oxygen sensors off the exhaust pipe and catalytic converter, take off the exhaust pipe from the engine manifold and hold the transmission steady as you remove the rear crossmember. Disconnect the clamp from the muffler and catalytic converters, then heat the joint with an oxyacetylene torch until the metal is cherry red. As the connection is still heated, twist the muffler back and forth as you try to separate it from the catalytic converter. For installation, first loosely join the catalytic converter and muffler, use a new clamp and tighten the nut to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). Join the exhaust pipe to the engine exhaust manifold and secure the nuts so each has 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.) torque. Reinstall the back crossmember, tighten its bolts to 41 Nm (30 ft.-lbs.) and take the support off the transmission. Spread anti-seize on the oxygen sensors, add them and tighten their nut to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.) torque. Once finished, drop the car, start the engine and make sure there are no leaks from the exhaust and no contact between the exhaust and panels.
