2001 Jeep Wrangler Speed Sensor Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Install a Speed Sensor in Various Drivetrain Configurations on 2001 Jeep Wrangler?
A: On a 4WD vehicle, the VSS is attached to the left-side side of the NV231 transfer case extension; for a 2WD vehicle, it is found on the extension housing left of the transmission. You need to raise the car, push the tab on the electrical connector to disconnect it and pop open the secondary lock before taking the connector off the sensor. Once you've removed the mounting bolt, pull the sensor straight out from the gear adapter fitted on the transmission, while still leaving the adapter connected to the transmission. Install the sensor by cleaning its inside and inserting it into the adapter and then make sure it is correctly seated against the adapter with the bolt torqued to 2.2 Nm (20 inch lbs.). Next, attach the electrical connector back to the sensor.
