2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser Neutral Safety Switch Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Replace the Neutral Safety Switch on 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Before replacing the transmission range sensor, disconnect the car's battery, take out the air cleaner assembly, battery hold down clamp and battery and remove the battery tray. Remove the gearshift cable from the manual valve lever and then disconnect the manual valve lever. After that, unhook the connector from the transmission range sensor and raise the vehicle. Remove the bolts that hold the oil pan and lift out the oil pan, after which you should get the oil filter out. After disconnecting the valve body-to-transaxle case bolts, turn the manual valve lever all the way clockwise to low or first gear to make removal easier. Gently get the park rod roller out of the guide bracket and remove the valve body attached to the transaxle, carefully avoiding to move the valve body manual shaft pilot. Move the TRS retaining screw from the drive shaft to release it and remove the seal from the manual shaft, before sliding the transmission range sensor onto the manual shaft and taking it off. To install the new sensor, first put it in place, tighten it with 5 Nm and finally install the manual shaft seal. Put the rod rollers from the park brake connector into the transaxle case guide bracket and then bolt the valve body to the case and secure them with 12 Nm. Once you have the department store oil filter, check the O-ring carefully and replace it if there are any problems. Put 1/8 inch of RTV along the gasket and bolt the oil pan to the engine, using torque of 19 Nm. Put the vehicle on low ground, attach the transmission range sensor connector and fasten the manual valve lever to its place on the valve. Slide the gear shift cable onto the manual valve lever and after that, attach the battery tray and battery before the air cleaner assembly. In the end, hook the battery cables back and pour in ATF +4 (Automatic Transmission Fluid, product number 9602).
