2001 Dodge Dakota Fuel Rail Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service the Fuel Rail and Injectors on 2001 Dodge Dakota?
A: The fuel damper cannot be serviced independently and because the fuel system is always pressurized, you must release the pressure before working on the fuel rail. Remove the fuel tank filler tube cap to start, then conduct the Fuel System Pressure Release Procedure. Detach the negative battery cable from the battery and then take out the air tube from the top of the throttle body, noticing that some engines may need you to remove the air cleaner ducts from the throttle body. Pull out the electrical connectors at each injector and notice their numbers for the cylinders they are supposed to serve; if these numbers are not labeled, tag the injector so you can identify them later. Remove the fuel line latch clip and fuel line from the fuel rail and at the throttle body, remove the throttle cable, speed control cable and automatic transmission cable if your car has one. Take out the intake manifold cable routing bracket, uncouple the crank sensor harness from the bolt on the fuel rail mount and take off the harness and clamp. First, eliminate any dirt on each fuel injector at the intake manifold and then take out the fuel rail mounting fasteners so you can gently swing the fuel rail out, one fuel injector at a time. During installation, make sure to clean the injectors on the intake manifold and use a little bit of clean engine oil on every injector O-ring. Align the ends of all fuel injectors with the intake manifold's injector bore and insert them. Please install the fuel rail mounting bolts and tighten them to 11 ± 3 Nm (100 ± 25 in. lbs.) torque. Then, place the crankshaft position sensor pigtail wire harness clamp and wire harness onto the fuel rail mounting stud and screw the nut in. Attach the tagged injector harness connectors to their respective injectors and after that link the fuel line and its latch clip to the fuel rail. Put on a protective cover for the pressure test port fitting, should your engine be so equipped and secure the cable routing bracket to the intake manifold. If your vehicle has a throttle body, attach the throttle cable, speed control cable and automatic transmission cable to it, before inserting the air tube into the throttle body body's top hole. Once done, put on the fuel tank cap, reattach the negative battery cable to the battery, begin the engine and check for possible fuel leaks.
