How to Safely Replace a Faulty Driver Air Bag on 2001 Dodge Durango?

Disabling the air bag system by unplugging the negative cable and waiting two minutes for the capacitor in the air bag system to drain is the first step to a faulty or damaged driver air bag replacement. Don safety gloves, glasses and a shirt that covers your hands and arms so you avoid skin irritation when you clean the stuff off the air bag. Disconnect the two screws holding the driver air bag to the steering wheel armature from underneath the steering wheel and pull the air bag free to see the wire harness connectors. Unplug the horn switch wire harness connector on the air bag from the horn feed pigtail connector at the back, making certain not to pull on the Clock Spring pigtail. Firmly hold the edge of the pigtail wire connector and gently lift to remove it from the air bag inflator connector receptacle and next remove the air bag from the steering wheel. After the air bag deploys, change the Clock Spring and air bag steering column. When installing, place the driver air bag trim cover on the air bag housing, connect the Clock Spring driver air bag pigtail wire to the air bag inflator connector until you hear a click and fit the end of the horn switch wire harness into its receptacle. Make sure the driver air bag is securely attached to the steering wheel, so it doesn't compress the wires, then attach the two screws on the steering wheel to 10 Nm (90 in. lbs.). After servicing any air bag system part, you should not reconnect the negative battery cable until you perform the air bag system verification right after.
