2002 Dodge Durango Air Bag Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Safely Replace a Faulty Driver Air Bag on 2002 Dodge Durango?
A: Start by removing and isolating the negative cable from the battery and afterward wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge. Underneath the steering wheel, you'll see two screws keeping the air bag in place; loosen and remove them. Pull the driver air bag away from the steering wheel to get to the two electrical connectors at the back of the air bag housing. Separate the horn switch wire harness from the horn switch feed pigtail, but don't pull on the Clock Spring wires while doing so. On the Clock Spring driver air bag wire harness connector insulator, pull the sides or gently pry to assure it separates from the air bag inflator connector receptacle. Took out the air bag from the steering wheel area. Once the air bag has been ejected from the driver's side, you have to exchange the Clock Spring and the steering column. When installing, if you have removed the trim cover or horn switch, put the driver air bag trim cover over the air bag housing. Move the driver air bag so that it we return the two bare wires inside the air bag housing to the back. Carefully link the Clock Spring driver end of the wire to the air bag inflator connector receptacle to confirm a clearly audible click. Attachment of the horn switch's wire harness connector to the horn switch feed pigtail is necessary. Guide the driver air bag to its place in the steering wheel without compressing either the Clock Spring pigtail wire or steering wheel wire harness. Fix and attach the two screws that connect the driver air bag to the steering wheel armature to 10 Nm (90 in. lbs.). You should not re-attach the negative battery cable now because a supplemental restraint system verification test is necessary after any part of the system is serviced.
