2002 Dodge Neon A/C Expansion Valve Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair an A/C Expansion Valve on 2002 Dodge Neon?
A: You should check that the refrigeration system is empty before servicing or repairing an expansion valve. At first, remove the refrigerant from the system and evacuate it, then come to the low pressure cut-off switch and unplug its wire connector. Take out the center bolt from the refrigerant line plumbing sealing plate and pull the plate assembly out, being careful not to scratch the sealing planes with the pilot tubes. Guide the contamination off the narrow tubes on the A/C line-sealing plate by sealing them off and then take out the expansion valve by carefully freeing the screws holding it on the other end. When putting numbers together, place the aluminum gasket over the evaporator flange, hold the expansion valve in place without touching the seal and tighten both screws to 11 ± 3 Nm (100 ± 30 in. lbs.). Now, set the aluminum gasket on the rear of the line-sealing plate assembly, hold the assembly to the expansion valve, add the bolt and secure it with 23 ± 3 Nm (200 ± 30 in. lbs.) of torque. Connect the wires once more to the low pressure cut-off switch and then finish by recharging the refrigerant system. Once you've installed the expansion valve, charged the system and checked for leaks, do an A/C performance check.
