2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Air Bag Control Module Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain the Air Bag Control Module on 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: It is important to first disconnect the car battery's negative cable, wait two minutes and then proceed with ACM service. For vehicles that have optional side curtain air bags, their ACM connector receptacles will be black, but those without will be gray. Lift out the center console from the top edge of the floor panel transmission tunnel, then loosen and take out the two holding nuts for the center console bracket connected to the studs directly in front of the ACM on the floor panel transmission tunnel. To remove the air bag overlay wire harness connector from the ACM, slide the red Connector Position Assurance lock toward the front, press the forward edge to free the latch tab and then pull on the connector to release it. After that, disconnect the wire harness connector from the ACM. You need to remove the four screws that attach the ACM to its mount welded to the floor panel and then take out the ACM. During installation, set the ACM on the mount so that the bottom of its housing is flat and the arrow on the sticker faces forward. Fix the ACM on place with the four screws and tighten them up to 11 Nm (95 in. lbs.). Don't forget to reconnect the instrument panel wire harness to the air bag overlay wire harness and verify that all latches and red CPA locks are in place. Fit the center console bracket onto the studs and attach it using two nuts that you tighten to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.), then reassemble the center console. It is important not to connect the negative battery cable again until after the supplemental restraint system verification test has been performed following any service to a supplemental air bag component.
