2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Clock Spring Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Replace a Faulty Clock Spring on 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: The Clock Spring should be changed if it is not working correctly, damaged or if the passenger air bag has already been fired, as it cannot be fixed. At the start, pull out the battery negative cable and avoid connecting it to anything, plus wait for two minutes to let the system capacitor empty. Check that the front wheels are aligned with the front of the car. Get rid of the air bag near the steering wheel, pull open the cover hidden under the Clock Spring and unplug the connector and separate the steering wheel from the steering column right afterward. Removing the screw underneath the steering column on the lower part of the tilting shroud from the multi-function switch housing below. Press lightly on each top edge of the upper shroud to open the snap features and remove both the upper and lower shrouds. Remove the wire connections from the two panel harnesses on the back of the Clock Spring case and unfasten the two screws holding the Clock Spring case to the multi-function switch mounting housing. Remove the Clock Spring by pushing it through the mounting housing, always keeping the rotor centered with the case before inserting it back in. Interlock the Clock Spring rotor and case so they stay still, position the Clock Spring over the upper shaft of the steering column and fit the three small pins on the lower rotor hub into the holes on the steering column turn signal cancel cam hub. Identify the oblong pin and make sure it fits into the oblong shaped hole found first. Lay the one pin and two ears on the Clock Spring case over their holes in the mounting housing, then tighten the two mounting screws to 2.5 Nm (22 in. lbs.). Return both instrument panel wire harness connectors for the Clock Spring, fix the lower tilting steering column shroud to the steering column and tighten the screw to 2 Nm (17 in. lbs.). Slot the tilting column shroud onto the steering column and make sure it matches the lower shroud; then click the pieces together. Slide the steering wheel onto the steering column, hook up the steering wheel wire harness connectors to the upper Clock Spring connector receptacles and reinstall the driver air bag atop the steering wheel.
