2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Air Bag Parts and Q&A
Q: What Steps Should Be Taken After an Air Bag Deployment on 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Supplemental restraints deployed in a vehicle must be replaced each time the vehicle is brought back into service. When the driver air bag has deployed, a new Clock Spring is needed and, when the passenger air bag has deployed, the passenger air bag door must be changed. The air bag tensioning system in the front should be replaced anytime either front air bag is triggered. Whenever a side curtain air bag deploys, the entire air bag unit, headliner and the upper A, B and C-pillar trim parts must be replaced because they are single-use and may have been damaged. You should always inspect and fix the points where the Air Control Module (Acm) and side impact sensors are mounted after any damage to the car, as incorrect adjustment might keep the air bags from functioning properly. Damaged parts of a car should be found and exchanged when their signs of wear are noticeable. If more than one squib is used to trigger multistage air bags, you should always check that all were used during deployment. When electrical signals from the Acm flow through squib 1 and squib 2, the driver and passenger air bags are deployed by the Acm through the air bag inflator initiators. Both are designed to be used, though, if there is a system issue, only one might be working, so both initiators should be checked to ensure no hazardous materials are handled incorrectly. Before getting rid of deployed air bags, you should verify with a Drbiii scan tool if doing so is necessary. Since two initiators could create live pyrotechnics when front air bags deploy, do not throw them away unless sure all of it has been deployed. Both untouched and already-used air bags should be disposed of as law requires at the state, provincial, local and federal levels.
