2002 Jeep Liberty Camshaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Replace a Camshaft on 2002 Jeep Liberty?
A: Initially, remove the cylinder head cover, camshaft position sensor and camshaft target magnet, then get rid of the timing belt before you remove the camshaft. Following that, remove the camshaft sprockets and the timing belt rear cover. The location of the bearing caps is checked and you need to remove the outside caps first. Remove the fasteners for the camshaft bearing caps following the given order, one camshaft at a time and always check which camshaft you have before you remove them, since they are not meant to change positions. After taking out the camshafts, use a good solvent to clean them. Make sure to check the camshaft bearing journals for any damage and frozen areas and check if the oil holes in the cylinder head are blocked. Check the cam lobe and bearings carefully for damage and if needed, replace the entire camshaft. Check the lobe wear using a standard value of 0.0254 mm (0.001 in.) which means if the wear rises above this or reaches 0.254 mm (0.010 in.), the camshaft should be changed. While installing the engine, be sure that no pistons have stopped at the top dead center. Give all the cam journals, the rocker arms and lobes a bit of grease, then put them back in their original positions if you decide to reuse the rockers. Handle the cylinder head bearing journals while setting the camshafts in place and fitting the rear bearing caps (No. 2 - 5 for the right and left and No. 6 for the right) with M6-12 Nm (105 in. lbs.) fasteners as specified. First, use the gasket maker on No. 1 and No. 6 bearing caps, put the bearing caps in place and tighten the M8 fasteners to 29 Nm (280 in. lbs.). Once the timing belt is in place, attach the camshaft oil seals, camshaft target magnet and camshaft position sensor and next comes the cylinder head cover.
