Camshaft is one of the important engine components in Jeep Liberty vehicles where it helps to control both the intake and exhaust valves allowing the mixture of air and fuel to enter the engine and expel the free gases out. - Q: How to Remove the Left Camshaft on Jeep Liberty?A:Make sure the Timing Chain does not turn by itself, apart from the camshafts or crankshaft, to protect the valves and pistons from serious damage while you remove the left camshaft. Wedge Locking Tool 8379 should be used to prevent the timing chain tensioner ratchet from locking up when you remove the cam sprocket, timing chains or camshaft. Start by removing the cylinder head cover, then bring the engine to TDC for cylinder #1 so that the camshaft sprocket V6 marks are at the very top. To help with installation, record one link on the timing chain on each side opposite the V6 mark on the camshaft sprocket. Don't force or hold the camshaft target wheel to keep it from being damaged and causing the engine to not start. Turn the camshaft sprocket retaining bolt counterclockwise, but leave it in place so it stays pushed up against the sprocket. Never remove the timing chain tensioners before you take out the camshaft sprockets or you'll have to take off the timing chain cover to put them back properly. Put the Wedge Locking Tool 8379 between the timing chain's strands and tap it to hold the chain against its guide and the arm. Grip the camshaft with Camshaft Holder 8428 when taking out the camshaft sprocket bolt and sprocket. Move the camshaft 5° clockwise with the holder until the holder is stable and no valves are loaded. Beginning at the outer retaining bolts, take off each one just 1/2 turn at a time, proceeding inward until load is gone on each bearing cap. Take care not to strike or stamp the bearing caps while removing them. Mark the Rocker Arms, as they might slide down when you take the camshaft out and then remove the caps for the camshaft, then the camshaft itself.
- Q: How to Install a Camshaft on Jeep Liberty?A:Apply engine oil to the camshaft journals and put the right side camshaft so that the camshaft sprocket dowel reaches the 10 o'clock position, then set the camshaft in neutral to help you install the caps. Later, set the camshaft in the cylinder head and install the camshaft bearing caps, tightening the bolts by hand to make sure that the serial numbers on the caps are read from front filling the back on the engine, with the caps' stamped arrows pointing to the front of the engine. Turn each cap retaining bolt a half-turn and do it from the center cap to the outer ones, all torqued to 11 Nm (100 in. lbs.). Guide the camshaft drive gear onto the Timing Chain, fitting the V6 mark between the two chain links. Put the Special Tool 8428 Camshaft Wrench on the camshaft and, by hand, turn it in one direction until the dowel on the camshaft sprocket slips into the slot on the camshaft sprocket. Then fasten the sprocket to the camshaft using the wrench. Take away extra oil from the bolt on the camshaft sprocket so that over-torque does not happen and the bolt does not break and then use your hand to tighten the retaining bolt into place. With Special Tool 6958, lightly tighten the camshaft sprocket retaining bolt along with adapter pins 8346 to 122 Nm (90 ft.lbs.). Once both parts have been adjusted, fix the Camshaft Position Sensor and the cylinder head cover.
