2002 Jeep Liberty Timing Cover Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix Timing Covers on 2002 Jeep Liberty?
A: First, you should get rid of the crankshaft vibration damper and the generator drive belt tensioner assembly to work on the timing belt covers. After that, take out the bolts from the front timing belt cover and lift off the covers. Removing the belt and the front covers is the first step for the rear cover. Hold the camshaft sprocket with Special Tool 6847 while loosening and removing the center bolt and next, remove the timing belt idler pulley. Get rid of the rear cover fasteners and remove the cover from the engine. Apply the rear cover, use bolts to secure it and press firmly a wrench to tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt near the timing locating pin for installation. First, put in the camshaft sprockets with Special Tool 6848 and then tighten the center bolt to 101 Nm (75 ft. lbs.), afterward, add the timing belt idler pulley and tighten it to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.). Attach both the timing belt and the covers, ensuring the fasteners are tightened to 7 Nm) 60 in-lbs.) and replace the generator drive belt tensioner and crankshaft vibration damper.
