First, take out the crankshaft vibration damper and the generator drive belt tensioner assembly to service the timing belt covers. After that, remove the bolts from the timing belt front cover and take the covers off. Before you can install the rear cover, eliminate the front covers and the timing belt. Hold the camshaft sprocket in place with Special Tool 6847 and remove the center bolt, then take removed the timing belt idler pulley. Loosen the bolts located at the rear cover and pull the cover off the engine. While installing the rear cover, place the timing belt rear cover and all bolts in position, besides the camshaft sprocket bolt which must be tightened by hand with a wrench, not an impact wrench. Slide in and install the camshaft sprockets, making sure Special Tool 6848 holds them as you tighten the central bolt to 101 Nm (75 ft. lbs.). Then, fit the timing belt idler pulley, pushing until it is seated fully, screw in the bolt to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) and install the timing belt and front covers. Afterward, position the timing belt front covers and tighten their fasteners to 7 Nm (60 in. lbs.). Then, reinstall the generator drive belt tensioner and crankshaft vibration damper.

How to Remove a Timing Cover on Jeep Liberty?

First, take out the negative battery cable and empty the cooling system to remove the engine timing cover.
