2002 Jeep Wrangler Brake Pad Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair Brake Pads on 2002 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Before servicing or repairing your brake pads, lift and support the car, then take off the wheel and tire assembly. Then press one side of the outboard brake shoe in to break the shoe lug, raise the shoe a quarter turn to disengage the spring and then press the other side in to separate the lug. After gripping the ends of the inboard brake, tilt it away to free the springs from the caliper piston. When done, pull out and remove the shoe. Should you be using original drum shoes again, be sure they are kept in sets for each side since left and right shoes are not the same. Don't let the brake hose support the caliper, instead use wire to secure it to a suspension part; then clean the caliper with rags or towels, not with a hose of compressed air to prevent dusting it. To install, first put the inboard shoe inside the caliper and press it all the way into the piston, next put one end of the outboard shoe in the caliper and turn it downward, making sure both the shoe's lugs and spring sit properly. Put on the caliper, then the wheel and tire, remove the support and you can lower the car. After that, pump down the brake pedal to get the caliper pistons and brake shoes properly seated and put more brake fluid if required.
