2002 Jeep Wrangler Brake Drum Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How Can Brake Drum Maintenance Ensure Optimal Performance on 2002 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Get rid of dirt and light oil from the support plate and wheel cylinder exterior with a damp cloth or brake cleaner. Do not try to clean these with any other agents. Light rust and any scale on the brake shoe contact pads should be removed using fine sandpaper on the support plate. Shoes with rivets should be changed every time they wear down to 0.78 mm (1/32 inch) from the rivets and shoes with bonded lining should be replaced when they're worn to 1.6 mm (1/16 inch). Make sure the drum has lined contact across its total width and that the shoes are not bent; contact only on one side in the lining calls for a new pair of shoes and an inspection of the drum for runout or tapering. If the star wheel, threads or components are badly damaged or heavily rusted, then change the adjuster screw assembly. Throw away any worn, deformed or broken parts of the brake springs and retainer components. If you feel dampness in your brake pedal while braking, change the springs, as exposure to heat can weaken them. Check the shoes on the support plate and change the plate if any pads are worn, rusted or if the shape is not correct.
