2002 Jeep Wrangler Speed Sensor Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain a Rear Wheel Speed Sensor on 2002 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Remove the sensors from the rear wheel harness first, then take out the wheel and tire and only after that, the brake drum. Then, cut away the clips securing the sensor wires to the brake lines, rear axle and brake hose and take out the sensor wire support plate grommet. Take out the connector from the bracket and then remove the sensor. Before reinstalling the original sensor, clean off all spacer cardboard from the sensor pickup face by using a dry towel. Stick the sensor wire through the opening in the support plate and then place the sensor grommet inside the plate. Either grease the original one with Lock N' Seal or Loctite 242 or use a new bolt and then tighten the sensor bolt just enough so the tip grabs the cylinder. When reinstalling the same rear sensor, change the air gap to be between 0.28 and 1.5 mm (0.011 and 0.059 inch) using a feeler gauge, then set the bolt to 12 - 14 Nm (106 - 124 in. lbs.). If you have a new sensor, slide the cardboard spacer onto the sensor face and tighten the bolt to about 12 - 14 Nm while turning the tone ring; this space will be locked in as the spacer is removed by the turning tone ring. Secure the wires behind the sensor to their clips, making sure they are not caught by anything that rotates and finally plug them into the harness connector. At the end, set the drum and the wheel and tire back in place, drop the vehicle and link the sensor wire to the connector on the harness.
