2003 Dodge Durango Clock Spring Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Replace a Faulty Clock Spring on 2003 Dodge Durango?
A: In case the Clock Spring is damaged, worn out or caused the driver air bag to deploy, it should be changed quickly because it can't be repaired. Beginning should only happen after you disconnect the battery negative cable and wait two minutes to allow the system capacitor to discharge. Straighten the steering wheel to be in the center of your direction. Take off the driver air bag from the steering wheel, remove the wiring harness from the Clock Spring connectors and slowly pull the steering wheel up and off its shaft. First, take off the cover that opens to the steering column and, if you have one, remove the steering column tilt knob. Remove all the screws at the edge of the upper shroud, slip the upper shroud out and take out the lower shroud as well. Unplug both connectors on the instrument panel wire harness that go to the Clock Spring and take out the screws holding the Clock Spring to the multi-function switch housing. If reusing the Clock Spring, place the rotor to keep it properly centered. When you're ready to install, center the Clock Spring and push it over the steering column housing until the tab matches the pin in the multi-function switch holder. Use a torque wrench to tighten the steering screws to 2 Nm (20 in. lbs.), reconnect the wire harness and put the lower shroud onto the steering column which you hold in place with the center screw. Place the upper shroud overhead, snap it down and fasten it with a few screws. For a tilt steering column, place and hold the tilt knob on the lever. Fit the steering column cover back in place and make certain the correct edge of the rubber booted engagement dowel has clicked into the Clock Spring. Then fit the steering wheel back on, connect the wire harness and replace the driver air bag.
