2003 Dodge Durango Dimmer Switch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service a Dimmer Switch on 2003 Dodge Durango?
A: To work on the combination switch, you must first isolate the battery negative cable to turn off the air bag system and then wait two minutes so the air bag system capacitor discharges. Remove the steering column's opening cover and after that unfasten the tilt steering column knob from underneath. After that, remove the screws holding the upper shroud to the lower shroud and pop open the snaps that secure them together. First, remove the upper shroud, then take out the center screw that is attaching the lower shroud to the housing on the steering column lock and finally remove the lower shroud. Before removing the multi-function switch, take out the screws that held it in place and then disconnect the wire harness connector from the instrument panel. Place the new multi-function switch in the mounting housing and fasten it down with screws that are tightened to 2 N-m (20 in. lbs.). Join the instrument panel wire harness connector and put the lower shroud over the steering column, adding the center screw and giving it 2 N-m (20 in. lbs.) of torque. After that, put on the upper shroud, line up the snap buttons and apply some hand force to hold it all in place. Attach and secure the screws linking the upper and lower shrouds to 2 N-m (20 in. lbs.) and after that install the tilt steering column knob and the cover for the steering column opening. After that, reattach the battery negative cable.
