2004 Dodge Durango Clock Spring Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain a Clock Spring Assembly on 2004 Dodge Durango?
A: When servicing the Clock Spring assembly, have the front wheels in front of you and turn off the negative battery cable. Taken the air bag off the steering wheel and separate the wires from the upper Clock Spring connector receptacles on the steering wheel. Remove the wheel by taking it off the column, always making sure the puller screws do no harm to the Clock Spring. Release the tilt steering column knob and then release the two outboard screws holding the upper shroud to the lower shroud. Push softly in on both sides of the upper shroud to open the snap features, then pull the upper shroud out. After that, remove the screw in the center of the lower shroud and remove the shroud. Slide the two gray, nine-pin wire harness connectors off the Clock Spring, then remove the two 8mm screws that secure the Clock Spring to the mounting housing for the multi-function switch. Should the Clock Spring be wrong or destroyed, it has to be changed, since it isn't possible to repair it. When reusing the Clock Spring, make sure the rotor is secured so that it remains correctly centered until you install everything again. Before installing, make the front wheels straight ahead, then lower the Clock Spring over the top end of the steering column until its locating tab lines up with the pin on the multi-function switch housing. Screw the instrument panel connectors to the Clock Spring securely and link the instrument panel wire harness back. Fit the lower shroud to the steering column, position the upper shroud and then connect them by clicking and tightening the screws. Replace the tilt steering column and, if the Clock Spring has been changed, don't forget to remove the holding pin. Make sure the yellow rubber booted engagement dowel is set properly during installation. After that, secure all the steering wheel wire harness connectors, attach the driver air bag and link the negative battery cable.
