2003 Dodge Durango Ignition Coil Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Install and Remove an Ignition Coil on 2003 Dodge Durango?
A: Every spark plug has its own ignition coil mounted on the top of the intake manifold using a screw/nut, after fitting into machined holes in the cylinder head. The rubber boot on the bottom of the coil protects the spark plug and includes a spring for connection; an O-ring closes the coil at the side of the cylinder which is protected by an O-ring. In order to take off a coil, you may need to remove the throttle body air intake tube or intake box. To remove the electrical connector, push the release lock down and then pull the connector from the coil. Spray compressed air at the coil mounting point to clean the base and then carefully remove the nut from the stud. Use a small twist of your fingers to remove the coil from the cylinder head and remove the part from your vehicle. To install the element, clear any dust from around the spark plug with clean air and examine the coil O-ring, changing it if needed. Rub silicone onto the O-ring to improve installation, line up the ignition coil in the cylinder head opening, push it onto the spark plug and ensure the base is over the mounting stud as you do this. Attach the stud nut after mounting and tighten it to 8 Nm (70 in. lbs.). After that, plug in the electrical connector by snapping it into its place. If anything is wrong, install the throttle body air tube or box again.
