2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee Air Bag Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Replace a Faulty or Damaged Air Bag on 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Start by disconnecting the negative battery cable and isolating it, so the supplemental restraint system is disabled. After that, allow the system capacitor two minutes to discharge. Take out the two screws that hold the driver air bag onto the steering wheel armature from under the steering wheel. Pull on the driver air bag away from the steering wheel in order to access the rear electrical connections on the air bag housing. Lift up on the horn switch feed pigtail wire connector found at the back of the driver air bag housing, pulling the harness connector connector for the steering wheel horn switch away from it, taking care not to damage or pull on the Clock Spring wires or pry on their connector insulator. The Clock Spring driver air bag pigtail wire connectors are held by an integral lock onto air bag inflator connector receptacles; ensure the lock is in line with the air bag connector and pull out the lock, next pull out the insulators and you will disconnect the Clock Spring inflator module and air bag. Take out the driver air bag from the steering wheel and if it's been used, also replace the Clock Spring. In mounting, make sure the driver air bag is near enough to the steering wheel to join the three wires at the back of the inflator housing. Align the two pigtail air bag wires with their connectors on the inflator and insert the lock straight in, making sure you hear it lock firmly in place. Link up the steering wheel wire harness connector for the horn switch to the horn switch feed pigtail wire connector. Place the driver air bag in the steering wheel without squeezing the Clock Spring pigtail or steering wheel wire harness. After placing the air bag in the steering wheel armature, tighten its two screws from underneath to 10 Nm (90 in. lbs.). Please do not reconnect the negative battery cable at present; the additional safety restraint system should be checked after any work on the system is done.
