Before working on the driver air bag, turn off the supplemental restraint system by disconnecting and separating the negative
Battery Cable and wait two minutes so the capacitor drains. Gloves, safety glasses and a shirt covering your full arms will guard you from any irritation by the cushion's chemicals. Turn the
Steering Wheel so each air bag-supporting spoke is at the bottom of the wheel. Unscrew the two screws from the underside of the steering wheel that hold the driver air bag onto the steering wheel armature. When removing the horn switch, do not pull on the horn switch wires. Lift the driver air bag out of the way to get to the wiring connections at the air bag assembly's back. Disconnect the driver air bag jumper harness connector that hooks up to the horn switch,
Cruise Control Switches and remote radio switches from the upper
Clock Spring rotor, not pulling on any Clock Spring control wires. An integral lock holds the Clock Spring driver air bag pigtail wire connectors, so firmly grasp the lock and pull it straight out before pulling the insulators off from the air bag inflator to remove them. After all, disconnect the air bag from the steering wheel. When the driver air bag has been used, the SCM/Clock Spring must be replaced.
