2003 Jeep Liberty Air Bag Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Safely Replace a Faulty Driver Air Bag on 2003 Jeep Liberty?
A: Start by cutting the power to the supplemental air bag system by disconnecting and isolating the battery cable negative terminal. Allow two minutes for all the power in the capacitor to be discharged. Protect yourself with rubber gloves, eyewear and a shirt that covers most of your arms while working with an air bag. Remove the two screws that hold the driver air bag to the steering wheel armature under the steering wheel. After that, pull the air bag away to reach the three electrical connections on the back side of the air bag. Unplug the wire connector from the horn switch feed pigtail that is connected to the horn switch using the switch wire switch connector. Make sure not to pull on the Clock Spring wires or lift up the connector insulator. Push the latches on the edges of the Clock Spring driver air bag pigtail wire connectors and pull each insulator to disconnect them. Uninstall the air bag from around the steering wheel and, when the Clock Spring shows signs of damage, replace it. With the new air bag driver placed near the steering wheel, attach all three electrical plugs to the connector, each time ensuring you hear a full click as the plug is engaged. Once you've reconnected the horn switch, set the driver air bag in the steering wheel so as not to pinch any wires and manually tighten the screws on each side of the air bag to 10 Nm. Reconnecting the battery negative cable may be done only after the air bag system verification test procedure finishes.
