2004 Jeep Liberty Air Bag Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How Can Air Bag Safety Be Ensured After Deployment on 2004 Jeep Liberty?
A: Any car that has its supplemental restraint deployed should have the deployed part replaced for safety. Should the driver air bag open, you will have to replace the Clock Spring and driver seat belt tensioner. Any passenger air bag that is part of the system needs the passenger air bag door, both air bag mounting brackets and the passenger seat belt tensioner to be replaced. An entire deploys in a side curtain air bag incident, all the related parts including the full air bag unit, headliner and A, B, C and D-pillar trim must be replaced because these are designed to be replacement and can be damaged or weakened during deployment. Anytime the side curtain air bag is deployed in a vehicle with a sunroof, the tubes and hoses should be carefully checked. You should also check the mounting surfaces and brackets for the Acm, side impact sensors and front impact sensors after any accident, since a poor fit or loose fastening could result in air bags not firing correctly or deploying when they should not. Replacing other parts of the vehicle should be done only when damage is clearly visible. The use of all the squibs in multiple-stage air bags must be confirmed upon deploying the bag. When the Acm sends a signal to the squib circuits, they send a light charge to the inflators' initiators, causing the air bags to inflate. Both initiators need to be verified in use to ensure that risky materials do not suffer mishandling. A Drbiii scan tool attached to the 16-way Data Link Connector (Dlc) on the driver side lower part of the instrument panel should be used for this verification. After the ignition switch is on, look at and keep a record of the Diagnostic Trouble Code that is currently active. If there are no active codes for either Driver or Passenger Squibs 1 or 2, the air bag squibs are considered unknown and the air bag should be dealt with and thrown out as if both squibs had live charges. Since two initiators are found in front air bags, they may have pyrotechnic material. Therefore, they should not be taken apart or handled in any way before complete deployment has been confirmed and proper rules are observed.
