2003 Jeep Liberty Clock Spring Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Replace a Faulty Clock Spring on 2003 Jeep Liberty?
A: A faulty, damaged or deployed driver air bag Clock Spring must be replaced, as repairs are not possible. Begin the process by hooking up to the vehicle's battery negatives and removing them, then wait for two minutes for the capacitor in the system to discharge. Have the steering wheel turned from the seat, until the car is facing straight forward. Take the driver air bag off the steering wheel, pull out the connector on the steering harness and remove the steering wheel from the steering shaft. Once your truck has a tilt steering column, make sure it is all the way up for the full turn. Get beneath the steering column, remove the two lower screws, gently push inward on both parts of the upper shroud and the snap features will release, making it possible to separate and remove them. Remove and disconnect both wire harness connectors from the two connector slots in the steering column underneath the instrument panel and then use a small, thin-bladed screwdriver to release each integral latched holding the Clock Spring to the steering column lock housing and remove the Clock Spring. To use the Clock Spring again later, first lift the release button on the rotor and push it so the spring stays centered. For setting up, gently slide the Clock Spring in place above the steering column, snap the latches until they all snap, plug the connector ends back into the panel, position both shrouds over the column, align the sections and push them together. Place the two screws on the lower shroud into the upper shroud, screw them in to 2 Nm (18 in. lbs.), move the tilt steering column back to the highest position if it requires it and screw the steering wheel into place, making sure the fastening screw is tightened within the correct torque. After that, attach the wire harness connector from the steering wheel to the upper Clock Spring and put the driver air bag back into position on the steering wheel.
