2004 Dodge Dakota Clock Spring Parts and Q&A

  • Q: Is It Necessary to Replace the Clock Spring if It's Faulty, Damaged, or After Airbag Deployment on 2004 Dodge Dakota?
A: A defective, harmed or deployed-driven air bag Clock Spring must be changed, because it cannot be fixed. Before anything else, remove the negative battery cable, let two minutes pass and this will disable the air bag system. Move the steering wheel all the way to straighten the front wheels as much as you can. Unplug the air bag from the steering wheel, take out each wire port from the Clock Spring and remove the steering wheel from the steering column. After that, take out the trim panel under the steering column and grab the tilt knob if you have it; if you do, pull it toward the back at the same time as removing the screws at the sides holding the upper and lower shroud units. Press softly up from both sides to unlock the top of the shroud and take it off. Unscrew the center fastener on the lower shroud and pull it off the steering column lock housing. Unplug the two wires from both the Clock Spring harnesses and unscrew the Clock Spring nuts to separate them from the mounting housing after that. Should the Clock Spring be reused, secure the Clock Spring rotor to ensure the clock core stays fixed until it is put back. While installing, center the Clock Spring and move it down over the steering column upper shaft to fit the locating tab onto the pin on the multi-function switch mounting housing. Secure the Clock Spring to the multi-function switch mounting housing with screws, put the instrument panel wire harness connectors back where they belong and fit the lower shroud onto the steering column. Use a center screw to hold the shroud in place. Attach the upper shroud in position, push the snap features until they click and fasten them with screws. If your steering column tilts, adjust it so that the tilt knob presses against the lever. Set the steering column opening cover in place, remove the new Clock Spring locking pin (if it's there) and mount the steering wheel with the yellow rubber booted dowel correctly aligned. After that, attach the steering wheel wire harness connectors and insert the driver air bag back onto the steering wheel.
