2005 Dodge Dakota Clock Spring Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Clock Spring on 2005 Dodge Dakota?
A: Before servicing or repairing the Clock Spring Assembly or Spiral Cable, first remove the battery negative cable, let the system capacitor discharge for two minutes and then the system will be disabled. Conduct an alignment at the place where the front wheels are straight. Take off the driver air bag by disconnecting it from the steering wheel, then unconnect the steering wheel connectors from the upper Clock Spring connectors. Lifting the wheel straight up, gently remove it so the steering wheel puller screws do no damage to the Clock Spring. Remove the tilt steering column knob, then get rid of the outboard screws that stick the upper shroud to the lower shroud. Press on the upper shroud on either side to release the snap fasteners, then lift off the whole upper shroud. After that, remove the screw in the middle of the lower shroud and take out the two wire harness connectors from the Clock Spring housing. Take out the screws tied to the Clock Spring to the multi-function switch housing and pick out the Clock Spring which should be replaced if needed or the driver air bag was used. If using the Clock Spring again, hold the rotor in place with a battery or another object until you are ready to install it. Be sure the front wheels are straight as you slide the centered Clock Spring over the steering column to fit the locating tab into the pin on the multi-function switch housing. Install the screws keeping the Clock Spring in position, reconnect the wire harness to the instrument panel and fit the lower shroud on the steering column using the center screw. Set the upper shroud on top of the lower shroud, hide the gap in the gearshift lever and click both shrouds together. Screw in the bolts securing the upper shroud and then slide the tilt steering column knob back. If installing a new Clock Spring, take off the plastic pin to center the steering wheel and then check that the yellow rubber booted engagement dowel is aligned before putting on the steering wheel. Connect the steering wheel wire harness back and place the driver air bag in place, then reconnect the battery negative wire.
