2004 Dodge Dakota Dimmer Switch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service a Dimmer Switch on 2004 Dodge Dakota?
A: Start by unplugging the negative cable from the battery to block the air bag signals and after two minutes turn the key to remove power from the air bag. Start by removing the cover around the steering column and after that remove the tilt steering column knob. After that, unscrew the screws holding the top shroud to the bottom shroud and pull off the snap pieces securing them. First, remove the upper shroud, then come out the center screw holding the lower shroud to the lock housing and finally remove the lower shroud as well. Take out the screws holding the multi-function switch, then pull off and set aside the whole multi-function switch and its attachment to the instrument panel. To install, set the new multi-function switch in the mounting housing and lock it in place with screws turned to 2 N-m (20 in. lbs.). Join the instrument panel wire harness connector, then slide the lower shroud onto the steering column and fit the center screw, tightening it to 2 N-m (20 in. lbs.). After that, place the upper shroud, match up its snap features and use your fingers to press them securely together. Install and tighten the screws between the upper shroud and the lower shroud to 2 N-m (20 in. lbs.), then add the tilt steering column knob and the steering column cover. Next, update the connecting cable to the negative terminal of the battery.
