2005 Dodge Dakota Dimmer Switch Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service a Dimmer Switch on 2005 Dodge Dakota?
A: First, detach the negative cable from the battery and leave it like that for at least two minutes so the system accumulator can discharge, to prevent the air bag from deploying on accident. Take the driver's air bag from the steering wheel and unplug the steering wheel wire harness connectors from the upper Clock Spring connector receptacles. Secure the screws holding the steering wheel puller and check they are not touching the Clock Spring and after that, take out the steering wheel from the steering column. Pull the knob on the steering column straight back to remove it from the tilt adjuster lever. Unscrew the two outside bolts just below the steering column and afterwards press in on both sides of the upper shroud to unlock the snaps. Take out the top shroud, after that remove the center screw that holds the bottom shroud to the steering column and remove the bottom shroud. Take out the wire harness connector from the section behind the switch and unscrew the switch held in place by two screws. Simply pull the switch control to the left and remove the switch from the vehicle. There is an alignment pin that locks the switch into place when you set it inside, so push the switch into the mounting housing and then tighten the two screws using 2 N.m (20 in. lbs.) torque. Hook the cable harness connector back to the switch at the back, lower the steering column cover and tighten its center screw to 2 N.m (20 in. lbs.). Cover the lower shroud with the upper one, making sure the gap hider and snap holes line up and apply pressure using your hand to get them snapped. Screw and tighten the two outboard nuts holding the shrouds together to 2 N.m (20 in. lbs.) and move the tilt steering column knob to line up with the tilt adjuster lever. Right before reinstalling the steering wheel, position the yellow rubber-booted engagement dowel against the rotor of the Clock Spring between the two fins on the steering wheel's armature hub. Next, attach the air bag again and place the battery's negative lead.
