2004 Jeep Liberty Camshaft Seal Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Camshaft Seal on 2004 Jeep Liberty?
A: The first action when repairing the camshaft seal is to remove the timing belt. Use the special tool, 6847, to keep each camshaft sprocket in place while you remove the center bolt, then go ahead and take off all the camshaft sprockets. After that, take out the exhaust camshaft target ring and the exhaust camshaft sensor, examine them both for excessive wear, clean the face of the sensor and fit a new spacer pad. Take off the rear timing belt cover, then use Special Tool C-4679-a to get rid of the camshaft seal while careful not to damage the seal surface or bore. When installing, ensure the seal surface is clean and has no varnish or marks, polish as needed with 400 grit paper. Apply Special Tool Md-998306 to install the camshaft seals into the cylinder head until they fit evenly with the head. Slide the timing belt rear cover back into place and make sure the target ring fully snaps onto the camshaft. Set the exhaust camshaft target ring into place, with its captioned Front part facing in front and then put in the exhaust camshaft sensor. Place the camshaft sprockets in their spots, secure each with Special Tool 6847 and tighten the center bolt to 101 Nm (75 ft. lbs.). Finally, refit the timing belt and front covers.
