- Q: What is the Proper Method for Installing a Piston Ring Set on 2004 Jeep Liberty?A: When installing piston rings, be sure the manufacturers mark is towards the top of the piston. First place the oil ring expander, then both upper and lower oil ring side rails, then intermediary piston at No.2 and lastly the upper most piston ring at No.1. Put one end of the side rail between the piston ring groove and the expander, hold it there and press down evenly on it, without using a piston ring expander. Set up the upper side rail at first, connect the lower side rail afterward and end with putting on the No.2 piston ring, finishing with the No.1 piston ring. Make the piston ring and oil ring expander gaps correct and ensure the expander gap is at least 450 away from the side rail gaps, with no alignment with the piston pin or in the thrust direction to properly control the oil.
