2004 Jeep Liberty Camshaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Replace a Camshaft on 2004 Jeep Liberty?
A: The first steps are to remove the cylinder head cover, take out the camshaft position sensor and remove the camshaft target magnet. Remove the next component, the timing belt, next and then remove the camshaft sprockets and the timing belt rear cover. You should look for bearing caps outside the engine at first. Open up the cover over the camshaft bearings, removing the fasteners in the proper sequence, allowing you to deal with each camshaft as a separate item, making special note that number 6 intake camshaft is set further apart from the block than the others. Find the camshafts and move them aside before taking them out of the head. After removing rocker arms, mark their places so they go back in the same position later. Use the correct solvent to ensure all parts of the camshaft are clean and check again the camshaft bearing journals and the cylinder head for any trouble. Check the cam lobe and bearings for any odd wear or faults and if they are found, change the camshaft. Take note of how much wear has occurred on the lobe, as the usual value is 0.0254 mm (0.001 in.) and the maximum is 0.254 mm (0.010 in.). Substitute the camshaft should it exceed the limit you have noted. It is important during installation that no pistons reach the top dead center position. Put lubricant on the camshaft bearing journals, rocker arms and camshaft lobes before carefully replacing all the rocker arms in their former positions if you are using them again. Place the camshafts on top of the bearing journal holes in the cylinder head and install the right and left camshaft bearing caps No. 2 - 5 and right No. 6. Tighten all M6 fasteners to 12 Nm (105 in. lb.). Remove the caps from the ends of your bell housing and use Mopar Gasket Maker on each cap. Then install the caps, screw in the M8 fasteners to 28 Nm (250 in. lbs.) and tighten them. Set up the camshaft oil seals, together with the camshaft target magnet and camshaft position sensor. After full assembly, put on the cylinder head cover, rear timing belt cover and timing belt camshaft sprocket and then install the timing belt.
