2004 Jeep Liberty Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair a Steering Knuckle on 2004 Jeep Liberty?
A: Before beginning to service and repair the steering knuckle, raise and support the vehicle, then unmount and remove the tire and wheel assembly, after that the caliper adapter and be sure to hold up the caliper to avoid damaging the brake hose. If your car is four-wheel drive, then unscrew the disc brake rotor, wheel speed sensor and axle shaft nut next. Replace the hub/bearing, sever the outer tie rod end from the steering knuckle and take off the lower ball joint nut. Use tool C-4150A to cut through the lower ball joint where it links to the suspension arm. Once separated, remove the upper ball joint nut and then remove the upper ball joint from the knuckle using the same tool before you can take the knuckle out of the vehicle. During installation, place the knuckle on the vehicle and attach the upper ball joint nut with 81 Nm (60 ft. lbs.) of force and then place and tighten the lower ball joint nut the same way. Place the outer tie rod end onto the steering knuckle, fit the hub/bearing next and lastly add the axle shaft nut, tightening all of them to 135 Nm (96 ft. lbs.) if you have four-wheel drive. Remount the wheel speed sensor, bend the disc brake rotor, secure the caliper adapter from above and at the end, mount the tire and wheel assembly, finishing with setting toe.
