2004 Jeep Liberty Ball Joint Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Rear Suspension Ball Joint on 2004 Jeep Liberty?
A: Before servicing or repairing the upper ball joint in the rear suspension, lift and support the vehicle first, then hold up the rear axle with a hydraulic jack. Remove the ball joint pinch bolt at the top of the axle, then use a pry bar to lift the ball joint away from the differential. After that, take the upper suspension arm off the car and clamp it in a vise. Use special tools C-4212F, 8861-3 and 8861-2 to remove the old ball joint. With all tools C-4212F (press), 8861-1 (receiver) and 8861-2 (driver) at hand, set the ball joint in place and press it into the upper suspension arm. Pull out the upper suspension arm from the vice and mount it again. With the rear axle lifted by the hydraulic jack, adjust the ball joint to be over the differential housing bracket, put it into the bracket and tighten the ball joint pinch bolt to a 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.) torque. After that, take down the supports and carefully lower the vehicle.
