2005 Jeep Liberty Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair a Steering Knuckle on 2005 Jeep Liberty?
A: When repairing the steering knuckle, begin by raising and supporting the vehicle, then take off the tire and wheel assembly, the caliper adapter and most importantly, be sure the caliper is held securely so the brake hose is not damaged. After washing the underside, remove the disc brake rotor, wheel speed sensor and the axle shaft nut if the car is AWD or 4WD. Take out the hub/bearing, split up the outer tie rod end from the steering knuckle and remove the nut keeping the lower ball joint in place. With help from tool C-4150A, separate the lower ball joint from the suspension arm and the upper ball joint nut as well. Use the same tool to remove the upper ball joint from the knuckle and take out the knuckle from the car. Install the knuckle first to the vehicle, then put the upper and lower ball joint nuts on and tighten them both to 81 Nm (60 ft. lbs.). Attach the outer tie rod end to the steering knuckle, put in the hub/bearing and screw in the axle shaft nut, making sure it is tightened to 135 Nm (96 ft. lbs.) if your vehicle has four-wheel drive. After that, fit the wheel speed sensor to the rotation sensor on each side, attach the disc brake rotor, caliper adapter and tire and wheel assembly and perform the set toe procedure.
