2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Exhaust Pipe Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain the Exhaust Pipe in Your System on 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Before working on the middle section of the exhaust system, raise the car on a hoist and apply penetrating oil to the fastener of the pipe part you need to remove, except for parts touching the muffler or exhaust isolators, where soap and water is what you should use. Delete the muffler, then take off the clamp around the band and the support isolator to separate the intermediate pipe from the catalytic converter pipe. Good mating of the parts requires you to clean and polish the ends of the pipes and muffler, throw out any damaged or worn isolators, clamps, supports and attachments and replace them with new, healthy ones similar to the originals. Don't use the clamps until after checking that everything is in place and no clearance issues exist; then, install the supports for the intermediate pipe and isolator, then the muffler underneath. Position each belt correctly and clear of underbody components and then tighten the band clamps to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). Band clamps must not be tightened so much that the two sides hit the hourglass-shaped block in the center, because it will stretch the clamp and make it less effective, requiring you to replace it. Pull off the nut on the band clamp and bend the ends of the clamp at the weld until the spot breaks apart. Then use a new clamp at the same angle as you did before.
