2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Exhaust Manifold Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service an Exhaust Manifold on 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: To start, disconnect the clean air hose and the air cleaner housing and then take off the negative battery cable. Following this step, take the throttle and speed control cables from the throttle lever and bracket before unplugging the MAP sensor's electrical connection. Take out the bolts attaching the reservoir of power steering fluid and the coolant recovery container to the cylinder head. Take off the bolts holding the upper heat shield in place and then get rid of the upper heat shield. Get the vehicle up in the air and separate the exhaust pipe from the manifold. Get rid of the engine wiring heat shield, the manifold support bracket and the heat shield that's under the lower exhaust manifold. After disconnecting the electrical connector, put down the exhaust manifold lower retaining fasteners before continuing. Drop the car and then remove the upper fasteners so you can take out the exhaust manifold and throw away its gasket. Clean every surface on the manifold and cylinder head, checking that the gasket surfaces are within 0.15 mm of flatness everywhere over 300 mm. If you detect cracks or distortion in the manifolds, replace them. To add the new exhaust manifold gasket, don't use sealer. Then, put the manifold in place and tighten all the fasteners from the center out to 23 Nm (200 inch lbs.), repeating the tightening until all bolts are safe. Fit on the two exhaust manifold heat shields, then tighten the bolts to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.) and after that fit and tighten the bracket and heat shield for engine wiring. Attach the oxygen sensor electrical connector, fit the exhaust pipe into the manifold, tighten the fasteners to 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.), then put back the coolant recovery container and hold the power steering fluid reservoir to the cylinder head. Reattach the electrical connector from the MAP sensor, the cables running to the throttle and speed control, the negative battery cable, the clean air hose and the air cleaner housing.
